Bushcare

Our natural areas include bushland, beaches, waterways and wetlands. These areas have been identified in surveys as being of primary importance to local residents.

Bushcare is a community based volunteer program supported by Sutherland Shire Council.

The Sutherland Shire Bushcare program is one of the largest in Sydney, with more than 700 volunteers involved in caring for over 120 bushland reserves, assisted by Council's Bushcare Officers.

Volunteers work under the direction of Council's Bushcare Unit, in accordance with recognised bush regeneration techniques.

Why is community involvement needed?

Sutherland Shire has approximately 3000 hectares of natural areas, many of which have become degraded by:

  • Rubbish dumping
  • Weed invasion
  • Stormwater runoff
  • Altered fire regimes
  • Inappropriate use eg illegal bike tracks and vandalism.

Community involvement is essential to help restore and preserve natural areas for future generations and prevent further degradation.

What does Bushcare provide?

  • Training and technical assistance
  • Materials such as plants, gloves and tools on loan
  • Rubbish collection
  • Information and education through regular newsletters and workshops
  • Opportunities to meet new people
  • Personal accident insurance and public liability insurance for approved Bushcare activities
