Parking and traffic rules – loading zones

A "Loading Zone" is a length of a road to which a loading zone sign applies.

Loading zones in public roads are administered under legislation - "The Australian Road Rules (Rule 179)".

Details of this legislation and others can be found on the NSW Government's legislation web site at www.legislation.nsw.gov.au.

The Australian Road Rules provides what the signs for loading zones must look like, what types of vehicles are allowed to stop in loading zone, the length of time vehicles are allowed to stop in loading zones and the penalty for not obeying the loading zone rules.

In general terms the following vehicles can stop in a loading zone:

(a) a public bus that is dropping off, or picking up, passengers, or

(b) a truck that is dropping off, or picking up, goods, or

(c) a vehicle that is permitted to stop in the loading zone under another law of this jurisdiction (see d – f below), or

(d) while any person is actually entering or alighting from the vehicle, or

(e) if the vehicle is a station waggon or a motor bike that has 3 wheels and is constructed principally for the conveyance of goods while the driver is actually engaged in taking up or setting down goods from the vehicle, or

(f) if the vehicle is a motor vehicle constructed principally for the conveyance of goods (other than a vehicle referred to in paragraph (e) while the driver is actually engaged in taking up or setting down goods from the vehicle.

The length of time a vehicle is allowed to stop in a loading zone is no longer than:

(a) either 15 minutes (where (e) above applies)  or 30 minutes, or

(b) if information on or with the loading zone signs applying to the loading zone indicates another time—the indicated time.

Loading zone signs can take three forms:

Loading Zone sign type 1

Loading Zone sign type 2

Loading Zone sign type 3
