Troubleshooting PDF download problems

These instructions are intended as a guide only.  Sutherland Shire Council does not accept any responsibility for any damage or problems arising from following these instructions.

Many documents on this web site are in PDF (Portable Document Format) file type.  To view these you need the free Adobe Reader or another PDF reader.

PDF files can viewed in 2 ways:

  1. using an Adobe Reader or other PDF reader program window
  2. viewed within your web browser eg. Internet Explorer, Firefox etc.

Which of these you use can be dependent on how your browser and/or PDF reader program is set up.

Individual PDF files can be read using either option 1 or option 2.  However some linked PDFs MUST be viewed within the browser or links within them will not work.

Setting your programs to view PDFs within the browser

How you set your computer to view PDFs within the browser depends on the type of operating system (eg. Windows, Mac O/S etc), browser and PDF reading program that you are using.  The following are the settings that you may need to change if you are using Adobe Reader - if you are using another PDF reader please check that program's own documentation.

To see if your browser and Adobe Reader are set to work together correctly:

  • when you open a PDF, see if you stay 'within' the browser (you still get the browser toolbar, web address etc. at the top of the page, with an Adobe toolbar below it) - this is correct.
  • the PDF has instead been opened in a separate Adobe window (and not stayed within the browser).

A suggested solution is to open your Adobe Reader, go to Edit - Preferences, in the lefthand column chose Internet, then near the top right ensure that "Display PDF in browser" is ticked.  Save the change and close Reader.  (The same applies if you have Adobe Acrobat Standard or Adobe Acrobat Pro.)  Restart your browser then try to open the PDF again.
