The Shire's population is changing, with alarming implications for the local economy.
Housing Strategy Part 1: The Importance of Housing Policy (below), reported that between 2001 and 2006 the Shire's population reduced and predicted continuing decline to 2031. The biggest declines were among 25 to 34 year-olds, children aged 5 to 11 years and 35 to 49 year-olds, which suggests the Shire is losing its families and workforce.
Shire households are also shrinking, with single or two person households replacing traditional families as the dominant household type. The proportion of the population aged over 65 grew from 12% to 13% and is predicted to reach 20% by 2031.
For the local economy fewer families and smaller, older households will mean less support for schools and businesses. The report identified housing supply as key to the problem and council is responding.
Council is preparing a housing strategy to deliver housing to meet community needs and more housing choices.
This will result in a more viable local economy and a more diverse and sustainable community.

Housing Focus for Community Leaders Forum
The Shire's housing needs came under the microscope at a 'Community Leaders Forum' held on Tuesday 4 August 2009 at the Sutherland Shire Council Chambers.
The forum was attended by around 80 residents who heard that with more people living alone, and an ageing population, demand was increasing for unit accommodation and single storey villas.
The presentation from the forum is available to view or download below.
