Wanda Sports Fields Proposal
In recent months, major land owners Australand and Breen Holdings have proposed a residential development on land owned by them adjacent to Wanda Beach. The residential zoning would replace the existing zoning which currently permits a range of industrial, commercial and tourism uses, and will instead enable the development of free standing home sites.
The proposal stands to deliver a number of benefits for Sutherland Shire including the transfer of 91 hectares of open space land owned by Breen and Australand to the community, an area approximately two thirds the size of Centennial Park.
A major part of the proposal, which council is currently negotiating through a voluntary planning agreement, is the provision by the companies of ten quality playing fields, walkways and cycleways, 460 hard stand car spaces, all internal roads and three separate amenities blocks on the open space land, all at no cost to ratepayers.
There will be many associated environmental benefits from the project which will create a continuous green link between Botany Bay and Bate Bay.
Treated water from the Sydney Water treatment plant will be used to irrigate the playing fields, resulting in a long-term reduction in the volume of water that would otherwise be used on the site.
It is also proposed that the future residential development will be supplied with an ancillary supply of recycled water from the Sydney Water treatment plant.
