Bushcare Volunteering

Do you want to become a volunteer? Gain experience, keep your mind and body active and socialise by meeting new people. Bushcare volunteers assist in the rehabilitation and protection of natural areas of the Sutherland Shire.

The environmental benefits are profound:

  • Protects our indigenous flora, fauna and remnant vegetation
  • Rehabilitates natural areas for future generations
  • Encourages active community involvement to manage bushland areas

There are educational benefits as well:

  • Get actively involved and learn skills to manage Sutherland Shire's bushland
  • Learn about environmental issues and methods used to minimise their impact
  • Get hands on experience to enhance further education or a career change

What do you need?

  • Enthusiasm, energy and a physical ability to work outdoors
  • Genuine concern for the natural environment
  • Time to volunteer either on monthly work days or a casual basis
  • Willingness to undertake a two day training course

What do Bushcare Volunteers do?

  • Weeding, mulching and planting
  • Seed collection
  • Propagation at Council's nursery
  • Training, workshops and seminars
  • Bushwalks
  • Administrative duties
  • Promotional activities

How do I become a volunteer?

All residents of the Sutherland Shire between the ages of 16 and 90, and other interested people, can register as a Sutherland Shire Bushcare Volunteer.

Step 1: Complete the online volunteer registration form

Our Volunteer Registration form (71Kb PDF) outlines the responsibilities and requirements of being a volunteer.  Print this document and fill in the relevant details.

Step 2: Return the online volunteer registration form

Step 3: Meet with your Bushcare Officer
